Zeeland Wedding | James & Nicole
A Zeeland Wedding Rooted in Family
There’s something extra special about photographing family weddings, especially when it’s your own cousin’s Zeeland wedding! When Nicole reached out and asked me to capture her big day with James, I was thrilled. Not only did I get to document their love story, but I also got to do it in the most heartfelt and personal setting: her parents’ backyard in Zeeland, Michigan.
Nicole had been planning this backyard wedding with such intention. Throughout the summer, she carefully tended to a vibrant zinnia garden, knowing it would bloom just in time for their big day. It was the perfect, personal touch and created a stunning ceremony backdrop that was completely her style.
Personal Touches Made This Zeeland Wedding Unforgettable
One of my favorite moments from this Zeeland wedding was the lime tree planting during the ceremony. Nicole and James wanted a way to represent the blending of their lives while also building something new together. It was such a unique and symbolic gesture and so fitting for a bride who adores gardening.
After the ceremony, we snuck away for a few portraits beneath the huge willow tree in the yard. That tree holds memories for both of us; I remember playing under it as a kid during family gatherings. Seeing it now in this context, as part of such a meaningful celebration, made the moment even sweeter.
An Evening of Good Food and Great Company
Following portraits, it was time for dinner and cake. The meal was catered and absolutely delicious, but the real showstopper was the cake. It was homemade by Nicole using her favorite recipe. It added such a personal touch to the evening. Everyone gathered, laughed, and caught up over great food and heartfelt toasts. The whole night had a relaxed, joyful energy, exactly what you’d hope for at a Zeeland wedding.
This day felt like the perfect blend of old memories and new beginnings. When family, flowers, and love come together like that, it’s pure magic.
