Devin and Steve chose the iconic Law Quad for their engagement session, and it couldn’t have been a more fitting backdrop. Nestled in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor on the University of Michigan’s campus, this Gothic-style location is a favorite among local photographers. It’s easy to see why. Between the towering arches, historic stonework, and peaceful green spaces, a Law Quad engagement session feels like stepping into a timeless love story.

A Hot Michigan Day and a Cool Couple

The day of Devin and Steve’s session happened to be the hottest weekend of the year. With a real feel of 100°F and thick humidity, we knew we’d need to pace ourselves. We planned for an evening shoot to catch cooler temps—and that dreamy golden light. I packed a cooler full of water to keep us all hydrated and we took advantage of every patch of shade the Law Quad could offer. Despite the heat, these two were total champs and full of laughter.

The History Behind the Law Quad

Devin and Steve loved the architectural charm of the Quad, and it’s no wonder. Designed by New York architects Edward Sawyer and Philip York, the buildings reflect the Gothic Revival style. Inspired by England’s Oxford and Cambridge universities, the design was meant to make a statement. William Wilson Cook, a Michigan Law alum, funded the entire project. His goal? To build a school that would lead the nation—starting with its home.

The Quad includes the Lawyers Club, Hutchins Hall, the Law Library, and the John P. Cook Dormitory. Every building is full of rich details and carved stonework. It’s the kind of place that reveals new surprises each visit. Fun fact: the Law Library was even considered for a filming location for Harry Potter! While it didn’t make the final cut, it certainly feels like a wizarding world when you walk through it.

These two looked like they stepped right out of a BookTok romance novel. They were effortlessly sweet with each other, full of playful energy and quiet moments that felt like magic.
