Breaking the Rules of Traditional Weddings

Let’s just say it, you don’t have to do it like everyone else.
No white dress? Cool. Don’t want a big wedding party? Go for it. Prefer crystal crowns over flower crowns? Hell yes, let’s do that.

If you’re looking for non-traditional wedding ideas that let you throw out the rulebook and do things your way, you’re in the right place. More and more couples are ditching outdated traditions in favor of meaningful, intentional moments that reflect them. And I’m here for all of it.

Who says you have to follow the rules?

Tradition can be beautiful if it resonates with you. But if you’re feeling pressured to check off a list of must-do wedding moments (even though they don’t feel right), it’s totally okay to skip them.

Bouquet toss? Matching bridesmaids? Cake cutting? You’re allowed to say ‘no thanks’ to anything that doesn’t feel like you.

Real Non-Traditional Wedding Ideas That Just Make Sense

Here are some amazing ways couples are doing things differently and loving every second of it:

  • Crystal Boutonnieres Instead of Florals
I recently found the coolest Etsy shop that creates custom crystal boutonnieres. You can choose stones that match your colors and give off the energy you want for the day (calm, strength, joy, protection—yes please). They even make crystal crowns so you and your partner can match like the magical, radiant duo you are.
  • Private Vows Before the Ceremony
Want to say something heartfelt without 100 people listening in? A private vow exchange before the ceremony is deeply emotional and gives you a quiet, grounding moment together.
  • Food Trucks & Charcuterie Boards Instead of Formal Dinners
Who says you need a seated dinner? Keep it casual with your favorite food truck or a big table of snacks, small bites, or even brunch food. Make it feel like a party you’d actually want to be at.
  • No Wedding Party (or Mixed-Gender Party)
Skip the wedding party altogether, or break the gender mold—have your best guy friend stand by your side, or your sister walk you down the aisle. Your day, your crew.
  • Wear What You Want
Black dress? Rainbow shoes? Jumpsuit? Crystal crown? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Your outfit should make you feel like your most authentic, empowered self.

Photography That Honors the Real You

When you let go of tradition, it opens up space to create a day that’s entirely your own. As your photographer, my job is to document that honestly and beautifully, not stage it to look like something it’s not.

If you want to dance barefoot in the woods, cuddle up on a picnic blanket, or throw the timeline out the window and just exist together, I’m with you every step of the way.

Go Your Own Way (I’ll Be There With a Camera)

Your wedding doesn’t need to follow a template. It just needs to feel right for you. Whether that means crystals instead of flowers, no speeches, or pizza at midnight…go for it!

And if you’re dreaming up a wedding that breaks the rules in all the best ways, I’d love to help you tell your story.
