Sunflower Field Engagement | Sara & Zach

When Sara and Zach booked their wedding package with me, they knew right away that they wanted a sunflower field engagement session. Lucky for us, I had just the place in mind—Schell Family Farm in Pinckney, Michigan. This location is a hidden gem for golden hour magic, and it’s available for photographers to use for a small fee.

I especially love photographing here not only for the beauty of the sunflower fields but because it also supports local farmers and contributes to pollinator-friendly spaces. It’s the best kind of win-win; stunning photos and a good cause.

Dancing in the Rain

The weather on the day of their sunflower field engagement session was one of those classic Michigan curveballs. Complete with overcast skies and rain in the forecast. But Sara and Zach were all in, and we decided to go for it. The soft light from the clouds gave everything a dreamy glow, and it felt like we had the whole field to ourselves.

About halfway through the shoot, the rain finally showed up, but with main character energy. Big, slow drops fell just long enough to bring out that earthy summer rain smell. Then, like a scene from a movie, it passed. What came next felt like pure magic: the sun came out and a bold rainbow arched across the sky, perfectly timed for a few more dreamy portraits.

The Magic of Spontaneity

One of my favorite moments from the day was watching Sara and Zach dance in the rain, laughing under the rainbow. With a little extra lighting, we were able to capture how vivid the colors really were. They’re so perfect, if I wasn’t the one to capture them, I would think they were fake! These are the kinds of unexpected, candid moments that end up being favorites in an engagement gallery.

Why Sunflower Fields Make the Perfect Backdrop

Sunflower fields bring a romantic and whimsical feel to any session. They’re vibrant, seasonal, and symbolically full of joy—kind of like love itself. Whether you’re going for soft and sentimental or fun and playful, they provide the perfect setting.

If you’re dreaming of your own sunflower field engagement, let’s make it happen. I know the perfect place and the best times to catch the blooms just right.
