Staying Cool During Your Photo Session

Wide angle of the Huron River and the Michigan engaged couple - how to stay cool during your photo session

Surviving the Summer Heat Without Breaking a Sweat

Whew. If you’ve checked the forecast lately, you know Michigan is turning up the heat this weekend. With temps pushing close to 100 degrees and humidity off the charts, it’s safe to say summer photo sessions need a little extra prep. But don’t worry. With the right tricks, staying cool during your photo session is totally doable. You can still look and feel your best even when it’s sweltering outside.

Whether you’re planning engagement photos, couple’s session, or a proposal, these simple tips will help keep things comfortable and fun. After all, your session should feel like a celebration, not a sweat-a-thon.

Staying Cool During Your Photo Session Starts with What You Wear

The number one way to stay comfortable is by dressing for the weather. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or linen that let your skin breathe. Light colors reflect the sun, so opt for whites, pastels, or soft neutrals. Avoid anything tight or clingy since those trap heat. Flowy dresses (like this one) or loose tops with shorts or relaxed pants work great for staying cool during your photo session.

And don’t forget, comfortable footwear matters too, especially if we’re walking around a bit. Bonus points for hats and sunglasses that double as stylish accessories and sun protection.

Hydrate and Take Breaks

Bring water. Lots of it. I always keep a cooler in the car with extra bottles, but it helps if you have one handy too. Staying cool during your photo session starts from the inside out, and hydration is key. We’ll take quick shade breaks as needed and I’ll work fast to make sure we get gorgeous shots without dragging things out in the heat.

If you’re prone to overheating or a naturally sweaty person like me, shorter sessions or early morning times might be a better option. I’m always happy to adjust our timeline for comfort.

Location and Timing Are Everything

We can work with the sun instead of against it. Scheduling your session during golden hour, early morning or just before sunset, keeps us out of the peak heat. Parks with shade, tall trees, or even spots near water can help cool things down.

Staying cool during your photo session isn’t just about what you wear, it’s also about where and when. We’ll find the best spots that look beautiful and feel comfortable, even on the hottest day.
