Backyard Howell Wedding | Sally & Mel

When Sally and Mel decided to tie the knot, they knew they wanted a wedding that was personal, intimate, and full of meaning. Their choice? A stunning backyard wedding at Sally’s parents’ home in Howell, Michigan. Not only was their day filled with love and laughter, but it also brought together two families, cultures, and traditions in a truly unique celebration.

A Howell Wedding with a Hilarious First Look Twist

During our conversations leading up to the wedding, Sally and I realized that we actually work together—such a small world! From the beginning, I could tell that she and Mel had a great sense of humor. They definitely proved it with their unforgettable first look.

Sally wanted to surprise Mel with a playful twist. Instead of seeing his bride first, his best friend donned a wedding dress and took her place. As I set them up just like a traditional first look, Mel turned around expecting to see his gorgeous bride. Only he was met with his friend instead! The laughter that followed set the perfect tone for the rest of the day.

A Meaningful Muslim Ceremony in Howell

Sally and Mel wanted their wedding to reflect the blending of their families. They chose a Muslim ceremony that honored Mel’s cultural and religious background. Unlike a traditional Western aisle entrance, Sally and her father walked together to meet Mel. Then the two of them walked to the imam, who officiated the ceremony.

For those unfamiliar, an imam is a religious leader in Islam who leads prayers, provides community guidance, and interprets religious texts. The entire ceremony was conducted in Arabic. Sally wore a beautifully modest wedding dress with a headscarf. A traditional choice symbolizing respect and modesty during the “katb al-kitab” (marriage contract signing) portion of the ceremony.

A Celebration Blending Cultures

After the ceremony, the couple hosted a reception that beautifully combined elements of Middle Eastern and American traditions. Guests enjoyed a mix of delicious cuisines. This included classic American wedding fare and Middle Eastern favorites like baklava. The celebration was filled with love, laughter, and of course, a cake cutting and a heartfelt first dance.

A Wedding and Two Anniversaries

Sally and Mel’s Howell wedding wasn’t the only milestone being celebrated that day. Sally’s parents were also celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary—on the very same date, September 11th! Adding to the magic, Mel’s parents were also celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary in the same month. How special to have such beautiful examples of lifelong love guiding Sally and Mel as they begin their own journey together!
